Global Counsel launches report with SSE on accelerating the delivery of clean electricity

Latest research report reveals five-step roadmap to achieving the UK government’s goal for clean electricity by 2030.

Global Counsel’s latest report, commissioned by SSE, draws on stakeholder workshops and bilateral discussions to consider the priority actions required to achieve Labour’s ambition of power decarbonisation by 2030.

Lilah Howson Smith, Practice Director for Climate, Energy and Net-Zero at Global Counsel, said:

“There is no single policy that will deliver 2030 - rather there needs to be incremental progress across a number of areas - often using existing policy levers. And these actions need to be co-ordinated coherently”

The paper calls for the new government to provide clear signals early on for a step change in green investment in the UK, and sets out its recommendations in five focus areas for action:

  1. Creating a central strategic delivery plan to bring together strategic energy infrastructure plans with policy and regulation to address barriers and maximise economic opportunities.
  2. Accelerating planning and consenting to ensure that the identified infrastructure can be delivered on time.
  3. Demonstrating big ambition on renewables to deliver sufficient investment and capacity and support the supply chain.
  4. Securing dispatchable low carbon power to facilitate the transition away from unabated gas and support the urgent deployment of CCS and hydrogen infrastructure.
  5. Setting out a focused market reform programme to support investment in low carbon infrastructure and deliver consumer value.

Taken together, action in these areas can enable the UK government to make progress at pace, using the 2030 goal to deliver greater momentum in the next five years than in the previous fifteen.
