Harnessing AI for Pharmaceutical Innovation: A Public Policy Summit
Share
A half-day summit of panels and keynotes, convened on behalf of Pfizer. The event brought together policymakers, regulators, life science and healthcare companies, tech experts, patient groups, and researchers to explore approaches to AI in healthcare and beyond.
Some key insights from the panel discussion and keynotes:
- AI’s potential to unlock capabilities is already advancing processes across the healthcare spectrum, including drug development, clinical trials, and the pharmaceutical supply chain.
- There is a growing need for international regulatory alignment and global cooperation in AI. Inconsistent regulations, principles and frameworks can undermine cross-border data sharing and global health initiatives.
- It is important to build AI systems that prioritize patient care and place the patient at the centre. AI tools should assist with tasks like data analysis and administrative tasks, freeing up providers to spend more time with patients.
- The discussions highlighted the need to address AI-specific challenges, such as bias, transparency, explainability, change management, and accountability. For example, clarification on aspects such as who is responsible for AI-driven decisions, especially when they lead to adverse patient outcomes.
