Statement of Basic Principles

  1. BEING TRANSPARENT IN WHAT WE DO

GC is committed to ensuring that its work with interested parties on public policy engagement is conducted transparently. We are signatories to and respect all relevant statutory and industry registers.

  2. SUPPORTING DIVERSITY AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

GC is committed to equal opportunities, respect and wellbeing for our colleagues, partners, and clients. Our full commitment to diversity can be read here.

  3. ENGAGING WITH PUBLIC POLICY CONSTRUCTIVELY AND ETHICALLY

GC supports clients who wish to engage constructively and ethically with the policymaking process.

  4. WORKING FOR THE LONG-TERM PUBLIC INTEREST

GC aims to use its expertise across a wide range of policy areas to work with clients towards long-term solutions that generate commercial advantage alongside wider positive social impacts.

  5. EXERCISING DISCRETION IN WHO WE WORK FOR

GC seeks to support clients who wish to make a lasting positive impact in their societies and whose commitment to that impact matches our own. Whilst we do not have pre-determined set of clients whom we will not support, as a guide we have recently declined mandates promoting tobacco sales and the liberalisation of gambling services.

  6. SUPPORTING CLIENTS WHO SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES

GC always encourages its clients to be their own advocates. We work alongside our clients, but do not speak for them. We believe that if clients cannot represent themselves, they will not effectively persuade policymakers of their case.

  7. WORKING FOR GOVERNMENTS BUT NOT POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS

GC occasionally supports government agencies and ministries with technical consultancy, but it does not provide political or campaign advice to individual politicians or parties.

  8. SUPPORTING OUR STAFF IN PUBLIC LIFE

GC encourages our colleagues to contribute to public life. This might include standing for election, contributing to public debates in the media or serving as non-executive directors. These roles should be undertaken in a transparent and open fashion, complying with all relevant regulatory requirements and principles.

  9. ADDRESSING AND RESOLVING CONFLICTS OPENLY

GC employs some colleagues for whom working with us is part of a portfolio career. In these cases, we expect them to be open about any conflicts of interest and resolve them before issues arise.

  10. APPLYING A CONSISTENT APPROACH ACROSS OUR GLOBAL TEAMS

GC’s statement of basic principles applies to all of GC’s operations and colleagues worldwide.
