Food donation to prevent food waste: meeting the EU’s food waste reduction targets

Global Counsel in partnership with the European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) has published FEBA’s position paper communicating the position of FEBA and its members on the European Commission’s proposal for EU-level food waste reduction targets. Besides reflecting on the policy options in question, it highlights the relevance of changing the perspective: moving from the notion of reducing food waste towards the idea of increasing Food Donation as an effective and efficient measure to both prevent the waste of precious resources and raise the food quantities redistributed to people in need.

In response to the European Commission’s food waste targets set out if the Farm to Fork Strategy, the paper sets out FEBA’s position on the proposal for legally binding EU-level food waste reduction targets for 2023, the contribution of FEBA members to the EU’s circular food system and best practice case studies from FEBA members from Greece, France, Czechia, Italy and Ireland.

The report formed part of Global Counsel’s partnership with FEBA through our Social Impact Programme to engage with European policymakers on upcoming food waste targets and to strengthen their position and visibility among EU policymakers, in particular around the debate on preventing food waste and reducing food insecurity.
